Windows explorer

I am having problems moving large amounts of files explorer eats up way to much memory and cpu usage that it ends up freezing i mean even moving small files is a major pain in the buttocks.

I was wondering if anyone is having problems with explorer when you go to move files no matter the size it eats up so many resources that it ends up freezing its a major pain in the buttocks

Yeah, I was moving a executable (465MB) from a zip file. It took awhile for the copy command to kick in, but took about 2 or three mins to copy. I have 512MB rambus (800mhz).. I need more ram. Keep in mind you are running beta software. But yeah, having tested this OS, I'd recommend that people have atleast 1GB of sdram, preferably ddr. And a good gpu on a IC card (nvidia or ATI).

I was wondering if anyone is having a problem with explorer using up alot of resources? Whenever I am copying or moving files it takes way too long and no matter what I do it doesn't seem to help the problem I know its not my computer because I have over a gig of memory

I know what you mean - I'm plagued by "are you sure you want to copy this" and "are you absolutely sure you want to copy this" messages, transferring takes ages for me too even over a direct LAN connection. The memory shoots up, and only shoots back down again when you close both Explorer windows.
Sorry Heather - I presume this is just because Vista's not completely optimised yet for performance :o(

I don't know, sounds like a driver issue to me, possibly with your video card. I would open Control Panel > (set to classic view) > open Problem Reports and Solutions > View Problem History > see if there are any specific issues that could be cause or related to the crash. Report back. -- -- Andre Windows Connected | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta

What build are you running? There was an earlier build (5381) I think that had an explorer error that was caused by the indexing service. People either had to disable indexing or use a US Locale to make it stop.

Thanks in advance.
My first complaint about Vista. I often use "Windows Explorer. Now, I have to rearrange the program to the way that I think that it is useful, every time I use it. It doesn't remember how I have changed the looks, ie. width, height, two pane display.....
Is
this avoidable?

Hopefully, in later versions.

Is there a Windows Expl;orer, as in I can see all my drive letters and work with that?
Tks heaps in advance

Yep, same place as in XP, under Programs-Accessories

Or just open any folder on your system. They all show through Windows Explorer. Open your Computer folder to see drives through Explorer.

There's also a Computer folder, which is basically the same as My Computer in XP. Typically you just click the Start button and click Computer on the right side of the Start menu to open it. If there is no Computer option on the right side of the Start menu, right-click the Start button and choose Propeties. Click the Customize button on the Start Menu tab. Choose "Display as link" under the Computer heading and click OK. (That whole Properties dialog box works basically the same as it did in XP).

One last minor thing. You can put a shortcut to that folder on your desktop. Right-click the desktop and choose Personalize. Click Change Desktop Icons in the left column. Check Computer and click OK.

In XP I copied my XNews folder to a second hard drive. It took probably about 15 seconds tops.
Then I hot swapped my main drive to this one with Vista on it.
It took 20 minutes to copy that folder back in Vista!
The progress bar was erratic. It would sit still for a long time and then shoot across a ways, then stop again. At times it said I had 22 hours remaining, then 55 seconds, etc.
Everything I DO in Windows Explorer creeps. It takes forever to expand a drive for instance.
My "rating" is 1. Broken down memory is the lowest at 1.6. The rest are in the 2's and 3's. I have a gigabytpe of Crucial PC3200 DDR memory. I have a Pentium 4 2.6Gb processor. Surely that should be enough to run Vista?

You might check your bios version against the mobo manufacturer's website to see if it might be worthwhile updating the bios.

Do you have indexing running? That can slow things down a bunch. --
